Oversupply discussed at 20th International Berlin Potato Evening as industry comes together to celebrate.

CELEBRATIONS and surpluses have been key topics in the spotlight within the German potato industry recently.

German growers were left with a surplus of potatoes following the highest potato yield in 25 years.

The large over-supply has led to potatoes being given away for free in some areas, predominantly to non-profit organisations and charities.

The oversupply was a topic of discussion at the 20th International Berlin Potato Evening (IBK).

Around 500 guests from 15 countries accepted the invitation from the German Potato Trade Association (DKHV) to attend event.

Representatives from across the potato industry, academia, associations, and politics met for the first time at the festively-decorated TITANIC Chaussee Berlin where they discussed current challenges and the political framework for the sector.

There was a focus was on the current market situation and the 2025 potato season being characterised by an unusually-large harvest. Expanded cultivation areas and favourable growing conditions have had a noticeable impact on the market.

Germans consume an average of 63 kg of potatoes per person each year, according to official statistics.
