Regional crops in New Zealand were poised to take a hit, but the role of the spud was a big focus of Foodie February.

POTATO growers in New Zealand reported that winter yields in some regions were likely to be 20% down following changeable weather conditions.

Potatoes New Zealand chair Paul Olsen said crops in Manuwatū were performing well, while further north in Pukekohe, growers experienced persistent rainfall.

Potatoes New Zealand used Foodie February to draw attention to the role of potatoes in everyday meals across the country, highlighting their place in domestic production and consumption.

Chief Executive of Potatoes New Zealand, Kate Trufitt, said Foodie February provided an opportunity to focus on the contribution of potatoes within the national food system and the initiative is intended to encourage awareness of locally-grown produce, while reinforcing the role of potatoes within New Zealand’s fresh produce sector.
