
RESEARCHERS at the University of Glasgow are developing a bacteriocin-based treatment for blackleg and soft rot in potatoes, following more than 15 years of research.
The diseases, caused mainly by bacteria and spread through infected seed tubers, are estimated to result in the destruction of billions of pounds worth of crops worldwide each year. Individual outbreaks can cost potato growers up to £100,000.
A research group has been investigating bacteriocins, naturally occurring protein antibiotics, as a method of targeting the bacteria responsible for the diseases. The work, supported by the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC), has led to the formation of spin-out company Casdu Crop Solutions.
Early glasshouse trials found that the treatment can suppress infection in seed tubers. The researchers said wetter summers could increase conditions in which infections spread.
Joel Milner, who is leading the research, said: “This isn’t about a silver-bullet cure. It’s about delivering a genuine improvement in the sustainability of an industry that matters hugely to Scotland, the wider UK, and indeed all countries where potatoes are grown.” The team is now working towards developing the treatment for use by growers.
