THE Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB), in collaboration with RICA and the International Potato Center (CIP), has officially launched Rwanda’s first National Potato Variety Catalogue, a landmark tool designed to support informed decision-making across the potato value chain.
The new catalogue will offer detailed information on the 19 officially-released potato varieties in Rwanda, including agroecological suitability, disease resistance, market use, and yield potential. Its aim will be to help growers, seed producers, traders, and policymakers improve productivity, align seed supply with demand, and support the implementation of Rwanda’s Strategic Plan for Agricultural Transformation (PSTA5).
Potato plays a vital role in Rwanda’s food security, nutrition, and grower livelihoods but, until now, there had been no centralised resource to guide seed producers, growers, traders, and regulators in making informed varietal choices.
A webinar was due to be held on Monday (June 2nd) to accompany the launch, but organisers have postponed this event and expect to reschedule at a later date.
