Weather challenges and later planting

Yields expected to be lower than last year, but tuber numbers encouraging, says report.

THE British potato crop was planted later than last year but earlier than in the wet spring seasons of 2023 and 2024, according to the World Potato Markets.

While planting conditions were generally favourable, growers have since faced a combination of heatwaves and intermittent rainfall and prolonged hot weather is likely to have increased irrigation costs and will potentially affect yields, the report states.

Early field assessments indicated yields may be below last year’s levels, although tuber numbers remained encouraging, suggesting potential for recovery if growing conditions improved.
