
MORE than 19,600 tons of potatoes have been harvested by the farming community in Lebap, Turkmenistan, spanning 1,400 hectares, and surpassing the state-established production goal, with the yield reaching more than 140 centners per hectare.
Potato harvesting is now actively underway, with some regions exceeding their production targets.
Harvesting is particularly active in the Dashoguz velayat, with local varieties like “Santa,” “Dostum,” and “Gala” being cultivated.
In the Charjev etrap, potatoes were grown on 500 hectares, yielding more than 7,000 tons. The Danev and Sayat etraps produced 4,200 tons from 300 hectares. Meanwhile, the Kerki and Halach etraps delivered 2,107 tons from 150 hectares and 1,822 tons from 130 hectares, respectively.
This crop hits the market at prices accessible to consumers, with a portion allocated to Miwe’s specialised cold storage facilities, enabling year-round availability of environmentally friendly potatoes.
Turkmenistan has a growing potato industry, with both production and consumption increasing. Potatoes are considered a strategic crop in the country and are grown in various regions, including Dashoguz and Lebap. Local varieties like “Santa,” “Dostum,” and “Gala” are popular owing to their taste, yield, and storage qualities.
The Shavat and Akdepe etraps are major potato producers in the region.
A rich potato harvest has also been collected in the Balkan velayat.
Farmers in the Lebap velayat have harvested over 19,600 tons of potatoes from 1,400 hectares, exceeding the state order.The Charjev, Danev, Sayat, Kerki, and Halach etraps are also involved in potato production in Lebap.
A Turkmen company, Tebigy Ekin, has harvested 2,135 tons of potatoes from 260 hectares. Tebigy Ekin also cultivates other crops like carrots, cabbage, beets, garlic, pumpkins, melons, and various fruits.
