POTATO DEMAND HIGH IN IRELAND

GROWERS URGED NOT TO HARVEST TOO EARLY AS PRICES REMAIN STRONG.

ANY new season potato crop fit for harvest is currently in strong demand in Ireland, according to the Irish Farmers Association (IFA).

Prices are strong as only small quantities are available.

Growers have been urged not not to clear fields at the expense of reduced yields when there is significant demand for produce and a recent Teagasc newsletter suggested that home-saved seed may affect yield and quality at harvest.

Similar challenges are being experienced throughout Europe, with prices high for early crop and demand exceeding supply.

Agronomists continue to report emergence issues with later plantings – mainly down to seed health and viability – and say the situation may worsen. Exports of ware from France to the UK to the end of April were 12,019 tons, compared to 911 tons over the same period last year.
